Veni Emmanuel (Christmas music through the ages)

December 15th, 2007

A festive evening of music not to be missed! The Serlo Consort will transport you through a plethora of different musical styles that composers have used over the centuries to celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus. We return to the glorious acoustic of St. John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood to perform our Christmas concert, and hope to see you there…..

There will be audience carols in addition to choir carols, the programme will be interspersed with seasonal readings (read by Philip Brooke), and the interval will give everyone the opportunity to have a glass of wine and a mince pie.

Composers will include Byrd, Victoria, Purcell, Vaughan Williams, Leighton, Warlock, Rutter and many more.

Come and get in the festive mood and enjoy an evening of first class Christmas entertainment!

Tickets (to include a glass of wine and mince pie) £10, £8 concessions, £5 children (under 18)

A year after The Serlo Consort was asked to work with Robin Gibb on his Christmas Carol Album, the choir is going to make its first CD recording. It will contain a mixture of items of a ‘reflective’ nature, and will be available for purchase at some stage from February/March 2008.

Latin American Baroque Music

September 29th, 2007

The Serlo Consort, with its small instrumental ensemble, performed a vividly exciting programme of music from the ‘New World’. Accompanied items were interspersed with unaccompanied items juxtaposing rhythmic vitality with expressive emotion. There was music to move you, music that gripped you, and musical discoveries that had your feet tapping! Some of the items were…

  • Padilla Deus in adiutorium
  • Lobo Versa est in Luctum
  • Juan de Araujo Los coflades de la estleya
  • Juan Garcia de Zespedes Convidando esta la noche
  • Gaspar Fernandes Xicochi conetzintle
  • Victoria Lauda Sion
  • Ugolini Quae est ista

Latin concert a huge success!

September 29th, 2007

The concert of Latin American Baroque music that we performed at the end of September was a huge success! We had a large and very appreciative audience, many of whom immediately requested that we perform the concert again soon. The editions prepared by our Artistic Director for a small instrumental ensemble and voices worked perfectly, and many comments were made about the use of space in the church building (antiphonal effects, 3 separate choirs, processional and recessional music, etc). A triumph that we are sure to repeat another time!

Evensong @ Westminster Abbey

August 25th, 2007

The Serlo Consort returned to this wonderful venue in the heart of London to provide the music for a summer’s evensong. The large-scale music included Parry ‘Blest pair of Sirens’, Stanford in A and Rose responses. The Abbey were delighted with us yet again, and immediately offered us a list of further dates to return to sing at!

Wedding

August 11th, 2007

The Serlo Consort provided beautiful music for this wedding in the simply stunning Norwich Cathedral. The Cathedral Organist, David Dunnett, will be accompanying the choir, and the programme of music included:

Missa Brevis - Palestrina

Sound the Trumpet - Purcell

Laudate Dominum - Dupre

Salve Regina -  Howells

Mass for Double Choir - Martin (Gloria only)

Blessed City - Bairstow

This Marriage - Whitacre

Congratulations to David & Sarah McKee!

August 11th, 2007

David McKee, our Assistant Director, and Sarah Hughes were married over the summer at a beautiful ceremony in Norwich Cathedral - where David is currently a layclerk. Despite a firealarm being set off in the speeches (!), the day was a memorable event - from the service itself, to the reception in the cloisters and splendid cathedral refectory. The weather was perfect, and we send them every blessing as they start this new life together!
